The two leading candidates in the race to be governor of Florida are sparring over who should be pursuing complaints filed against debt collectors – the Department of Financial Services or the Office of the Attorney General – and angling for their respective offices to get more power over debt collectors through new legislation. Both candidates want to be perceived as protecting Florida consumer and pursuing collection agencies that are deceptive or abusive. This situation mirrors the trend of increased regulation and enforcement currently progressing against debt collectors in many other states.
